+2: And speaking of The Crowe, both spazzkat and agrimony alerted me last night to his being on The Daily Show. Since we regularly Tivo that, I watched it. It was very odd seeing Jon Stewart seem awkward and almost intimidated. I mean, DAMN, I don't remember hearing him ever call ANY of his guests 'sir'. And for once he was really reaching for stuff to say--not only jokes, but just questions in general. He barely seemed able to come up with stuff to ask Russell about the movie. Russell got off a couple funny comments, and seemed to take it all in good humor, but still. Jon seemed to halfway believe his own crack at the beginning of the show about the 'biggest virility gap' they'd ever had between him and a guest.

I almost want to find Mr. Stewart, pat his shoulders, and tell him, "It's okay. He does that to me, too!" ;)

-3: My brain's been really balky for the last couple of days as I've tried to make it give me a longer version of the pitch for Lament, as well as more words for Chapter 12 in general. Grf. I may be trying too hard. I'll just have to see what I can come up with by Writer's Weekend next week!

Hi, I found you through cruisedirector - liked what you were saying on her recent post - and the fact that you're doing a lot of writing interests me as one of these days I'm hoping to give that a go, moving beyond fanfic to original fiction.

Well, hiya and welcome aboard! I'm always happy to hear from other folks who are pursuing their own writing--and making the jump out of fanfic seems to be a common way to do it. Though my own experience is with online text-based roleplay games (from which I have preserved an archive of several hundred of my roleplay logs) rather than true fanfic, it's almost the same thing, so I'm all about the sympathy for that. :)

I've greatly enjoyed cruisedirector's posts, and am delighted to hear from someone else out of her circle of LJ, too!

I wondered whether they had had words before Russell walked out onstage or something -- they definitely did not seem comfortable with one another. Jon actually made Russell sound funnier than he is!

My local paper liked CM in two different reviews, though the Style section guy was irked about Baer's portrayal as several other critics who actually know anything about boxing seem to be. The weekend section guy, like the NY Times critic, thought the movie was, well, a Ron Howard boxing rah rah movie but thought Russell elevated everyone around him. *G*

It had indeed occurred to me to wonder if Jon had talked to Russell beforehand, though it hadn't occurred to me if they'd had words! Though if they had, Russell was hiding it well, since he seemed to be quite relaxed and laid back.

I am boxing-clueless, so what do the boxing-clued have against the portrayal of Baer? And heh about the second critic--neither "Ron Howard boxing rah rah" nor Russell's elevating everyone around him surprises me. ^_^

The only thing I thougth I knew about Baer was that he was Jewish (and he was shown wearing a Star of David on his boxers), but as it turns out that's not even right...his father was Jewish, and at that time since under Jewish law descent had to come through the mother, he probably did not consider himself Jewish. But Hitler would have, as he was perfectly well aware, and he was passionately anti-Aryan at a time when few Americans were paying attention to what was going on over there, having problems of their own. (I read that he was also a womanizer and somewhat egotistical, but that hardly makes him the vicious, thuggish sleaze Howard and Grazer turned him into.)

Russell always elevates everyone around him. It's why Paul Bettany keeps bringing him up in interviews even though you'd think Paul would want to distance himself for his own career sake, I think. *ggg*

Hrmm. Shame about the inaccuracy of the film in regards to Baer, then. I'll have to keep that in the back of my head while I'm watching it. But then, I guess it's sort of a similar level of 'grain of salt' as one has to maintain when watching A Beautiful Mind, eh?

Hee! I giggle every time Paul mentions Russell. Though he'll have to work hard to top that crack he made about being Russell's bitch. ;>

Good question! I'd think that Paul would have shown up if Jennifer did. :)

Me, I've been amused at all the sightings of Alan Doyle in pics of Russell at various events lately. The girls on the GBS board I frequent have been playing Spot The Alan in pics from the L.A. premiere, and the Indy 500 pics got posted there as well.

Maybe Paul is miffed that Russell dumped him for Alan.

My head is so full of packing lists for next week, I can hardly think straight about my manuscript. When I get twitchy about getting everything done, I think of the wonderful people I'll get to spend time with. It'll be great to see you.
