+0: Today's Cultural Warfare Update from my beloved solarbird has something in it that's absolutely priceless: references to a guy on the Far Right who has actually been quoted on FOX News Radio as defending having sex with mules as a "normal" part of growing up on a farm in Georgia. I mean, DAMN! spazzkat now thinks we should all organize a fundraiser to send this man as many stuffed mules as possible. Dara adds, "Or just postcards with mules on the front. 'Miss you sweetie, wish you were here'."

Also, she includes with this update that the Eastside preacher who claims to have pressured Microsoft into backing off supporting HB1515 is now claiming he will take "action" against Microsoft for changing its stance. I have one thing to say to this, and that is, "HAVE FUN LEARNING LINUX, KEN!"

+1: Is it terribly egotistical of me that upon seeing the What Science Fiction Writer Are You? meme going around, my immediate answer to this was, "Me!" ^_^ (For the record, my actual result was 'Isaac Asimov'.)

When you do take time to read asimov, I highly suggest Songs of Distant Earth It is a wonderful story set in the far future. My copy of it is well worn and read.

Anything by Isaac Asimov is a must read read, but this one is even admitted to be one of his favorites.

Cool, thanks! Dara's got some Asimov in her library; I don't know if she's got that one, though. I'll look. It'll be a while before I can get to it, though; too much stuff already on my To Read shelves! :)

Most of my Asimov memories, due to my status as an unrepentant visual-thinker, are of the covers of his books. As I recall, the kinds in our school library shared a lot in common with the 1983 version of _Dune_'s painted exposition/explanation.

Very what-we-in-1950-assume-the-future-will-be-like. Art Deco meets _Star Wars_ or _Alien_. Aside from those covers, I used to subscribe to EC Comics 'Vault of Horror', 'Tales from the Crypt' et c. Reprints of their 1950's pulp horror stories.

They actually did an Asimov story, 'The Trial of Adam Link.' I don't remember what the title he gave it was, it may've been a derivative of the Three Laws or an actual short story he did. Anyway, 'twas awesome.

My Dad subscribed for years to Asimov's Science Fiction Digest, which is naught but a collection of monthly submissions from up-and-coming sci fi authors. Be warned, though, I bored myself to death with Isaac on the 'Foundation' series.

Dara's got a lot of Asimov's and Analog, yeah; I've heard of the zine. Haven't ever read any of its issues, though. Thanks for chipping in! Asimov has always been recommended--I mean, how can you not be an SF fan and see him unilaterally recommended? ;) I've just been laggardly in actually reading any of his work. I'm laggardly in general in reading a lot of the classical SF authors--Asimov or Heinlein or Bradbury and the like. This is what I get for coming into the fandom via fantasy, I think.

Heinlen's a pretentious bastard. Bradbury I like. 'Martian Chronicles' is still a favorite of mine.

Though Adam Link was a early sympathetic robot, his stories were by the brothers Eando Binder not by Isaac Asimov.

I own many Asimov books yet only a tiny fraction of the 400 books he wrote. Be warned that Asimov's reputation as a science fiction writer rested on his ideas. His character development is weak and his writing style is very plain. His best writing in my opinion is not his science fiction novels, but the science articles he wrote as a monthly column in F&SF. Those were collected and can sometimes still be found in the science section of bookstores.

Amusing tidbit: 'The Outer Limits' did an adaptation of _The Trial of Adam Link,_ and one reviewer says: "It reminds me of _A Few Good Men_ kicking me repeatedly in the groin." (Ha!)

*snicker* I've heard that about Heinlein, yeah. From what I'm given to understand about how he has exactly one (1) female character in his entire repetoire, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't actually like his work much.

Never heard anything against Bradbury, though!

Thanks for the input on Asimov, Erin! Thinking about it, I have this vague memory of trying to glance at one of Dara's Asimov books, one of the Lucky Starr ones. ;) And your input is jibing well with that in my head. I remember exactly nothing about that book, though.
