A poster over on [livejournal.com profile] 13th_colony nicknamed this episode "Cylons of the Lambs", which made me giggle. Here's the poster's quote:

'The interrogation scenes where Clarice Starbuck was questioning Hannibal Leoben were my favorite parts of tonight's episode of "Cylons of the Lambs".'

Very appropriate description, as there was lots of amusing mind-fuckage between Starbuck and the captured Cylon. Lots of mileage about Cylon religious beliefs--or at least this particular model's interpretation of them. Lots of collision of monotheism vs. pantheism as well, with the Cylon ragging on Starbuck for worshipping Artemis and Aphrodite, and her sarcastically informing him that she believes that "the gods don't answer the prayers of toasters".

We get a lot of backstory about Starbuck--at least, assuming that the Cylon was accurate in his guesses about her history, and he certainly seemed to be given Starbuck's reactions. This already gives us way more depth to this character than we ever had with Dirk Benedict's Starbuck in the original show. And I really liked seeing Starbuck sneak off to her locker at the end and getting out her little idols and murmuring a prayer over them. I would almost more expect her to worship Artemis and Athena, if you're going back to actual Greek mythology--but Aphrodite isn't exactly inappropriate either.

But this episode's really all about developing major female characters. We get good Boomer mileage, too--and it's good to see her actively begin to wonder whether she is human or Cylon. Very, very interesting to see that the Cylon detector does seem to work--and even more interesting to see that Baltar does not in fact tell Boomer what he's discovered. It'll be fun to see what, if anything, he does with this information.

And at the same time, Caprica Boomer seems to be undergoing a possible shift towards the human side, too. She's not seeming too happy about this whole playing with Helo thing--and I begin to wonder whether the Cylons aren't trying to find out whether they can in fact breed with humans. That seems to be the most likely explanation I can think of for keeping Helo alive and trying to set him up to settle down with Boomer.

Intriguing that Caprica Six calls Caprica Boomer "Sharon", too. One wonders whether the Boomer line is more prone to going "human" than others.

Lastly, fun mileage with President Roslin and her prescient dreams about the Cylon captive. One does wonder whether it's the kamala she's been taking that gives her weird dreams, or whether there's something more mystical going on; the original show had a huge dollop of mysticism going on, and we've already seen plenty of indications that this iteration of the show will be exploring those angles as well. Or, is it something more prosaic, such as the Cylons messing with her, somehow? I'm mostly inclined to the mysticism angle, just because I can't quite buy that the Cylons could mess that intimately with everybody. Guess we'll see.

Also, I liked seeing her be bad-assed enough to send the Cylon right out the airlock after his little 'revelation' about Adama. We already know she's that bad-assed; this is, after all, the woman who issued the orders to leave the ships not capable of making light speed behind, and to go ahead and destroy the Olympic Carrier. But still, it was good to see her being consistent--even as I was wondering just a little whether her order to fling him out the airlock was at all connected to her reaction to what he had to say, or whether she was playing him the entire time.

Very, very interesting, too, that she did not tell Adama what the Cylon said. Which tells me that he accomplished his mission: sowing discord and doubt in the Fleet. And it'll be real, real interesting to see if that little grain of doubt grows into something more severe between Roslin and Adama.

Fun, fun stuff all around.
