solarbird informs me that it is now snowing in Kenmore, and snow has been reported as far south as Northgate. Additionally, my lead just emailed our team alias at work saying he's stuck at home thanks to icy snow on the roads of the hills where he lives, so he can't make it in.

I'm STUNNED. It's mid-February and we're getting snow! This is not typical. :) But it WOULD start snowing AFTER I get to work. ;)

UPDATE 10:40am local time: It is now snowing like crazy here at Microsoft. Wow. It'll be interesting to see if this keeps up--and whether it'll impact the floating bridges and 405.

UPDATE 11:12am local time: Aaaaand the snow has stopped. Apparently, the weather demons are being capricious today.

Just looked out the windows in the hall outside my lab--it's snowing like crazy here now. O.O It'll be interesting to see if this keeps up. Last time we had snow of any accumulation, it made getting home from Microsoft a bit of a challenge!

I was on public transit last time, too! :) The busses even get impacted by any SERIOUS snow--they get really, really delayed. Last time, the 520 bridge was closed down due to hazardous driving conditions on the bridge itself, and any time the bridges (520 and I-90) are out of commission, it means anybody who wants to get from one side of the lake to the other has to go AROUND. Adds a lot more travel time.

The one difference is that then, I was still living in the U-district and had to go across the lake to get home. Kenmore is on the north side of Lake Washington, so I can get away with not having to go across the lake if I have to. Going around is still a good hour if not longer by bus, if I don't make the right connections. But it's doable!

when darthfrog got up at 915, there was SNOW! he announced it and startled me. but when i got up just now it's more than half gone already. so we must have just gotten the trailing edge of the weather systems since you folks seem to be getting dumped on.

It seemed to be a very fleeting burst of snow, sadly enough. :) Last I looked, the sun was peeking out, and there was no accumulation to speak of.

And my boss made it in, too.

Floating bridges?

It was rainy and VERY windy here all day... almost lost my Invader ZIM cap while walking to work, when the wind caught it and threw it into the middle of Peach St.

The two bridges that span Lake Washington and which provide the means for state route 520 and I-90 to cross said lake are floating bridges, yes. It's a special kind of bridge that they had to invent specifically because of Lake Washington; the bottom of the lake is so silty and the layers of silt are so deep that traditional bridges weren't really an option. (Dara adds that it's an adaptation of a WWII thing, where they had a sort of temporary version of floating bridges to more quickly get stuff across rivers.)

OK... I think there's one of those around here, too, about 40-50 miles south in Cochranton area... it carries I-79 across a large swamp...

I tried to find a picture of it to post a link to, but only found pictures of a lot of "disappearing bridges" in Crawford County PA... though I did find a nice little picture of the little old bridge near the house my grandparents lived in...
