+0: I added the blogs of the Nielsen Haydens to my Friends list last night, and already have found both of them worth the visit. I was especially pleased by TNH's recent post with much commentary about the very interesting trends in the fanfic community and how so many folks there are applying a lot of surprisingly professional standards to doing their work--and what will happen when these folks decide to make the leap to being pros. Since I'm coming out of a very much related community--i.e., MUSHers--I find a lot of the trends she's discussed in that post to be applicable to my experience as well.

Also, it was great fun to follow her provided links off to Sara Donati's set of essays about writing good sex scenes, which begins with this post on her blog. Again, with my MUSHing experience, I repeatedly found myself thinking of the differences between good tinysex scenes and bad ones, and how you can use the same rule discussed in these essays on the vast majority of them: i.e., you can replace most tinysex scenes with "and then they had sex" without making the slightest bit of impact on the characters' lives.

Also #2, I had to snicker at PNH's crack about how our President is apparently afraid of being heckled by Canadians. ;P

+/-1: Work promises to be... interesting this week. In the Chinese sense. The FTE (that's Full-Time Employee for those of you who don't speak Microsoft-ese) I work with is taking the rest of the week off due to his father having health problems, which means I get to run all the tests we're responsible for myself this week. And I get to work with the developers and arrange test machines for them to use, and I get to open bugs and regress bugs and close bugs, and in general try to do twenty things at once. This was pretty much what I did today, starting off with a Surprise Japanese BVT Pass when I got in this morning. For extra added goodness, we had to install the build to test straight off of CD rather than off the usual network servers. This would have made me a LOT crankier if I hadn't realized that I could tweak my usual install scripts to just run off the CDs rather than going out onto the network--because I'm here to tell you, if you don't actually READ Japanese, don't even try to install Japanese Windows. Not unless you have English Windows installing on a machine right next to that one, so you can figure out what the heck you're supposed to be doing.

On the one hand, part of me enjoys the challenge, but on the other hand, I'd like to actually have a stretch of a few hours where I can just chug through what I need to do at work without having unexpected duties thrown my way. Sigh.

-2: For two mornings running, I have awakened in the middle of REM sleep. As I have ranted on this journal before, I hate that. It's especially annoying when I am jolted out of a dream in which my dreaming self is actually pissed off--as happened this morning. I was dreaming about riding my bike into some unnamed industrial complex of some sort, and getting lost. I remember having to actually go through some sort of toll/pay booth to get out of the place, which annoyed me on general principle. It did not help, either, that the booth was manned by a cop/guard type who made some sort of snarky remark at me when I couldn't provide my driver's license for his inspection--and that, too, pissed me off, both because I had to provide my ID and because of receiving the snarky remark. I no longer remember what was actually said, but I distinctly remember bellowing something to the effect of "And what kind of sexist, offensive remark is THAT supposed to be?"

So for the rest of the morning, I had THAT lingering over my brain, while I was trying to figure out how to run six installs of Japanese Windows off of CD and get them to work without me having to personally run through each setup. (See previous item.) Fun!

+3: On the other hand, I have discovered this week that the new guy who just joined our team actually plays the mandolin. :D Although I have not yet actually seen it, he apparently keeps a mandolin in his office. I have no office, otherwise I'd do that myself! But it was great fun to see our lead do a double-take during our status meeting yesterday afternoon, when I leaned over to the new guy and told him it was cool to have another mandolin player on the team.

The new guy apparently likes bluegrass-type mandolin music, though, as opposed to Irish/Celtic. But hey. As Heather Alexander has said, same music, different whiskey.

Note to Self: Must actually PLAY the mandolin more often. Or at least the bouzouki.

+4: And here, have a quiz. I was actually expecting Chaotic Good, given my usual inclination towards such Alignments for any characters I play that have them, but I find that Neutral Good actually does fit me personally. So!

You scored as Neutral Good. A Neutral Good person tries to do the "goodest" thing possible. These people are willing to work with the law to accomplish their goal, but if the law is corrupt they are just as willing to tear it down. To these people, doing what's right is the most important thing, regardless of rules, customs, or laws.</td>

For two mornings running, I have awakened in the middle of REM sleep. As I have ranted on this journal before, I hate that. It's especially annoying when I am jolted out of a dream in which my dreaming self is actually pissed off--as happened this morning.

It's nice to know I'm not the only one having that problem lately... only my dreams have been more strange and than pissy... like the one 2 nights ago where I almost killed my brother by throwing a carrot at his head... I was in the middle of declaring my innocence and telling everyone just how ridiculous this was, when I jerked awake... Wish I woulda known the outcome... oh well... my theory, the dreams are just so unreal that our subconscious processes it and the logic centers in our brains kick in and scream "WAKE UP YOU FOOL, THIS ISN'T REAL!!!"... but that's just my take, and would be interested in hearing others'.

And here, have a quiz. I was actually expecting Chaotic Good, given my usual inclination towards such Alignments for any characters I play that have them, but I find that Neutral Good actually does fit me personally. So!

I thought I'd be more chaotic, but then again, being a double Libra, this doesn't surprise me...

Hmmmm... I turned out to be Chaotic Good though when I was gaming a lot I tended towards the Chaotic Neutral alignment for my characters.

"Can you do something to make text you're quoting a bit more obvious? I have a hard time separating out my text from yours. :) You might surround quoted text in italics tags, like I do, like this: This stuff will show up in italics".

Ergh.. I hadn't thought of that... for some reason yours doesn't italicize when I quote it like the others do (is it because you're special? :-D) But yes, I will keep that in mind though...

As for dreams, it's not a matter of the dreams being 'unreal' to me; it's a matter of the dream reality being strong enough that my brain has a hard time disengaging from the dream state and actually waking up when the alarm clock goes off, so my rhythms are off for hours throughout the day.

Hrmm... dunno what to tell you there... ::thinking::

Did the same for me.. but still came out true neutral, only with slightly lesser concentration in that area... someone else who took it after i posted on my LJ said it was "flawed".

Heh! All this makes me miss what little exposure I've had to D&D, and it makes me want to go play Nethack, too (wherein I've had the majority of my amusement with characters of different alignments ;) ).

You and me both... I've gotten the new books (some of them- what I could afford) and the new Ravenlofts and the Masque of the Red Death setting in Gothic Earth, but I highly doubt I'll ever 1) understand all the new rules, 2) have the time to play it, or 3) provided I meet the two prior requirements, find anyone else mature enough to play it with, without making up their own rules, etc.

Is there any difference between my posts and others' you might be answering? My journal has a custom style on it, so that's the first obvious thing I can think of that would make my journal different from anyone else's. (This, of course, being relevant mostly only if you're answering comments from Livejournal's site itself rather than, say, in email.)

That might be it... for some reason I can't answer via email (i dun like me)...

As for the dream thing--usually I can get around this problem if I get adequate sleep and don't overload on caffeine. ;) So it's less a thing that actually needs a solution and more me just reminding myself to sleep better! ;)

Ah yes... Caffeine.. sometimes a necessity and your best friend, and others- the greatest evil... I find that if I don't think and drink coke or other caffeinated beverage before bed, my sleep and dreams are ultimately affected... I try to avoid it before bed, unless I'm extremely thirsty and there's nothing else but city water (puke) to drink, then i throw all caution to the wind... anywhos, I hope your problem is solved for the moment...

I went through a phase of buying gaming manuals some years ago--manuals I've never wound up doing anything with. They're occasionally fun to go back and read, but I doubt I'll ever actually do anything at all with them! Our local friends have fallen out of gaming, as many of us would like to game still but none of us want to go to the hassle of GM'ing.

That's about where I'm at... I have one friend at work who is into it, but I haven't even seen him in 3 weeks due to the "sickness" to even talk about it... Zavien (remember him?) would, but he lives in Ann Arbor, and I only see him once or twice a year, and all the rest of the people I used to game with live too far away, and I've lost contact with them... would be soooooo nice to resurrect that nasty SOB Palin again ::evil grin::

These quizzes often are. This one's better than many--it at least has no spelling errors that I caught ;)--but still.

true... nonetheless, they're fun... but when someone with a chaotic personality comes out lawful good, well... heh

What email client are you using and what browser? Some email clients will not in fact let you answer LJ comments from email messages. I can't answer comments from email right now myself, given that my browser of choice has become Firefox and it doesn't play well with Outlook when I try to answer LJ comments. (It'll actually still let me post the reply, but it gives me an error message too.)

I use AOHell, and nothing seems to like AOHell... Half the time when I go to update my LJ, or just load the sight, I get an error saying HTTP version not supported or somesuch... :-\

Yeah, I remember Zavie. Doesn't sound like you see him often enough for gaming to be feasible, no.

No.. I don't see any of them often enough... I saw Zavie around TG for a day, and we talked about it, but 300+ miles is just too far to get into a serious game when it would have to be put off for a year until we could pick it up for a day again... I remember back in the day (now I sound like an old person) when we used to play D&D religiously for days on end... now we can't find the time to do anything... really sucks getting older...

really sucks getting older...

Unless you're 35 or older, or unless your younger sibling's oldest child (who you vividly remember seeing for the first time at age 11 months) is now a TEENAGER, I don't wanna hear it. :)

Ha! Got ya on at least one count there... I just turned 37 in October... Though my younger sis's oldest is only going to be 11 in January, I remember very vividly singing her to sleep when she was just 2 months old, and buying her a stuffed cat in the Hallmark shop to quiet her down in the mall (yes, uncle David spoiled her back then- they lived with me, what can I say?) My oldest nephew (my bro's kid) is 15, and 5'11" tall, and ... damn, I don't want to think about it... too depressing- especially since I don't have any of my own :-\

Okay, you're officially allowed to bitch about getting older in my presence. ;)

So what you're telling me is, in a few more years that oldest nephew of yours will be old enough to very possibly make you a great-uncle? *waits for the head-splody pop*

Argh... you just HAD to say that, didn't you? couldn't leave it well enough alone, could you? Argh!!!!!! ::quietly crawls into corner to suck on thumb...::

I am chronically behind on my email, and I do well to keep up with my Livejournal.

::whistles innocently:: the problem with that is he's just so ... wordy... and it takes at least an hour to sort out what he's saying in any given email... and after working 8 hours talking to people who don't know their ass from a hole in the ground, I haven't got the energy to do so...
