GBS musings

Even though I discovered them last summer and therefore 2000 gets credit as the Year Anna Fell in Love with Great Big Sea, 2001 is really when my affection for the music of four guys from Newfoundland has caught serious fire. Along with my little sister who asked me to play flute for her at her wedding in June (and y'know, you just can't refuse a request like that from your beloved little sister), Alan Doyle, Sean McCann, Bob Hallett and Darrell Power are all personally responsible not only for me taking up my flutes and piccolo again. However, the formation of the Murkworks Jamming Group is their fault and their fault alone, at least as far as the raving fans that comprise the majority of our little band of bards is concerned. ;)

Regardless, for the wave of musical inspiration they've touched off amongst me and mine, the B'ys are arguably now well and thoroughly confirmed as my all-time favorite band.

Furthermore, they're all responsible for me seeming to morph into a real live filker. Granted, I'd already started writing a little ditty here and there based on my MUSH characters, and I've a couple other filks to my name as well. But in the last three months or so I've already written two GBS-based filks and I've got a third one rolling around in my head already. Even more frighteningly, I've got ideas beginning to form in my little head for actual not-filk songs.

So this journal really has to start off with me mentioning that my latest filk is based on GBS's "Boston and St. John's" and is a modest little appeal for them to come back to the Emerald City and sing some more. Naturally, as soon as "Seattle to St. John's" was finished, I had to post it to the greatbigsea.com chat board, and I was delighted at the reception it received. But that was nothing compared to how delighted I was when not one but TWO shows in Seattle were announced practically right on the heels of my little composition.

Now, a rational woman must of course attribute this to glorious coincidence, and at least in theory I am a rational woman...

But I'm aglow nevertheless with the sheer marvellous timing of it all, and I'm certain I'm going to spend the next month and a half grinning giddily in anticipation of the return of the B'ys to my adopted hometown. I cannot describe how much the notion of listening to their high-energy boisterous music on St. Patrick's Day of all days appeals to me. Most of the time, I think of myself as a fairly shy person--at least in face-to-face situations, I'm a lot more confident online--but I am practically intoxicated with the thought of hearing their music live again, as well as that of Paperboys. Enough that I'm putting actual consideration into attending both the scheduled Seattle shows.

And on St. Paddy's Day, I may even dance.
