Stuff done lately
Aug. 24th, 2004 11:12 amMostly I've been all about the editing of Faerie Blood's second draft, but I have managed to sneak a few other things into my daily activities. Most of these things have been involved with shopping.
Yesterday,
solarbird,
spazzkat, and I went down to the Northgate Mall and hit Target, Best Buy, Suncoast Video, Nordstorm's, the food court, and Silver Platters in that order. Our quests: a coffee carafe for Paul, who'd damaged another of his and needed a replacement. Makeup for Dara, and a possible replacement CD deck as now that we have separated our video media from our audio media, we have nothing that plays CDs in the living room! (We'd been playing our CDs up till now on either the laserdisc player or the DVD player.) And Volume 3 of the Battle of the Planets DVDs for me. Most of our quests were successful in one way or another; Paul got his coffee carafe, Dara got her makeup, and I did get Battle of the Planets DVDs--but I wound up buying the boxed set that includes the first 12 episodes and the equivalent Gatchaman episodes, even though this boxed set overlaps with discs I already own, since it was about the same price at Silver Platters to get the boxed set vs. the three discs I was missing.
We also wound up getting other DVDs as well. Dara picked up the Cowboy Bebop movie at Target, and we also wound up buying several $5 discs from Silver Platters' bin up front full of schlock. That was a gigglefest, as that bin had a whole lot of movies that we'd previously seen only on Mystery Science Theater 3000--such classics as Attack of the Giant Leeches, Killer Shrews, and Hercules Against the Moon Men. And we all got tasty ice cream things at the Dairy Queen in the food court in the mall.
And I wound up buying, at Best Buy, a software edition of the Oxford dictionary/thesaurus for my handheld. I figure that'll be handy if I'm writing on the handheld and I don't have access to the net, and especially if I'm away from home and don't have my paper dictionary and thesaurus handy.
Thanks to the recent cold snap we've had, batteries in cars in our social circle have been dying right and left. The battery in
kathrynt and
llachglin's car died on Friday night when they came over for poker, and on Sunday, it was Dara's and my turn. We'd wanted to head over to the Woodinville shopping center to look around for a CD deck and to get a new cushion for our papasan chair, but when we tried to start the car nothing happened. Oops.
So we had to get into Monster, and head out in search of a battery. Dara didn't want to drive Monster for the whole shopping trip, since the truck's turn signal lever broke off so she has to signal turns by sticking her arm out the window, and that's a pain in the ass in the rain. Fortunately there is a Schuck's not terribly far from our house, so we popped in there and got a new battery and hauled it home again, and Dara installed the battery in the engine. I watched, because I had no idea how to stick a battery in an engine, but now I think I could probably do it if I had to. Whoot!
Once the new battery was installed, we hopped back in the car and finally set out for Woodinville.
At Cost Plus Imports we picked up the cushion we wanted, and looked at new chairs for the kitchen table, too, since we didn't have enough matching chairs to seat more than three at the table at once. Dara found some she liked, but we were only able to buy two since we couldn't fit more than two in the car. We'll have to go back later and get the other two.
At Target we hunted high and low for ice cube trays, the kind with tiny cube holders, because Dara wanted them to make bouillon cubes from what's left of the chicken broth that Kathryn made for us. We've had a devil of a time actually finding ice cube trays anywhere--and they were hard to find at Target, too. But Dara refused to believe there were no ice cube trays there, and she was right, though it took having to flag down a guy who worked there and asking him where the heck the ice cube trays were. And as part of our recent splurging on DVDs, we also picked up Kill Bill Vol. 2 (to go with Vol. 1, and I suppose I'm going to have to watch both of these now), the theatrical release of Return of the King (just because I've been dying to see it again), and a little DVD that had the pilot of Babylon 5 on it. Dara wanted to see if it was the same edition as one she had already--and it turned out it was, but she was willing to risk four bucks on it.
Then we swung over to Linens 'n' Things, and wound up getting another of the really lovely comfy pillows we've been buying from them lately, since I wanted one for the bed. And we got a couple of new potholders and an oven mitt for the kitchen, since our old potholders have all these burned patches on them.
On the way back from there we swung around on the ninja route back into Bothell, and stopped at the Storables so Dara could look for a new cheap fax machine. We got there about 10 minutes before closing, but did indeed find a fax machine.
And we hit Safeway on the way home, and got food because we sorta kinda need to eat, too.
