Udon and GBS therapy

Whatever part of me is in charge of system maintenance (the thing that kathrynt refers to as the Nano-Mechanical Anna) was hyperobsessed with the thought of udon soup today, with a cube of bouillon in it. Specifically the bouillon. solarbird made me this for dinner tonight, and I damn near swooned at the taste of it. Something in there was desperately, desperately needed--the salt, perhaps. Or the protein. It tasted unbelievably good.

With a similar level of desperate craving, I fired up my "GBS Favorites" playlist in iTunes tonight and damn near broke into tears at the sound of the Fire in the Kitchen version of "Lukey" starting off the list. I made it through to "Paddy Murphy", which was next, and desperately, desperately wanted to sing, but my throat went "Ah, no. Let's not go there yet". This must definitely be a sign that I am improving, because now I am starting to think about wanting to belt out ditties again rather than lying in bed being miserable.

By the time the playlist hit "When I'm Up" I had to have my guitar in my hands, so I went downstairs to get my instrument and the tuner, and played "Mari-Mac"! I broke into a sweat doing it, but hell, that happens when I'm healthy!

Gentle readers, I do believe this means I am back.

Good for you. Don't do anything to damage your voice, but do keep playing. Just be careful you don't subvocalize too much when you play.

*nodnods* I've been mouthing the words a lot, and occasionally mumble-singing stuff in the very easy center of my range (some of the bits of "Excursion Around the Bay" are really dead square in the middle there), but I figure as long as I've got sore throat muscles and it hurts a bit to swallow, I damn well better take it easy.

That IS such a great version of "Lukey", isn't it? I still get shivers from the harmony every time GBS and the Chieftains belt out "ONE SPLIT PEA IN A TEN POUND TUB". There's just something about that one part of the song where their voices all meld together in this great ringing hammer of a chord, and mrrrrrr.

Thank you much for checking in--today, I get to try to DRIVE, as I have a dental appointment I have to get to, and solarbird has to stay here to wait for the DirectTV guy to show up and install our satellite dish. This should be an adventure, for both of us. ;P :)

Amen. :) I have had GBS rolling around a lot in my brain in the last several days--and through one or two extremely uncomfortable moments while at the hospital during the surgery as well as at the ER, where I was trying to distract myself by songvirusing myself with "General Taylor". But it's so much better to be wanting to listen to the actual music.

And I think as soon as we get the new media room here at Murkworks North set up, I shall have to take another spin through the Great Big DVD. :D

I have not heard that recording! Oh man, I wonder where I might find it. I have adored all the songs that I've heard them do together--not only "Lukey", but on certain songs on Turn where the Chieftains are listed in the credits as supporting musicians. I amuse myself trying to figure out which songs they're singing backup on on that album.

Indeed! There's a great deal of healing power in the voice of Alan Doyle. :D

*giggles* Maybe--though I do note that there are differences in the harmony on songs where I know that the Chieftains are there, vs. GBS just by themselves. There is a much richer, fuller harmony in the Fire in the Kitchen version of "Lukey" than on most GBS songs; I don't know if it's because there are just more men singing there or because they're actually doing more-than-four-part harmony, but there's definitely something in there pinging my ear.

And it may also be one or more of the Chieftains having a certain quality of voice that's distinct on some level to my ear, enough that even though I haven't heard them perform by themselves, I'm unconsciously trying to pick out their voices. I have this half-suspicion that one of them has an even deeper voice than Darrell Power, a voice I'm not hearing in, oh, say, "General Taylor".

I should really listen to one of their own recordings and see if my theory is correct. :)

They tend to do that, it seems--do albums with oodles of guests. :) I need to get re-recommendations for good Chieftains-only albums; I'd tried to do that before, and damned if I can remember any of the specific albums recommended!

as for RDA, as adorably cute as he was in the MacGyver years, i find him WAY sexier in the SG-1 years! OMG!!!
and what's sexiest of all? seeing him *LIGHT UP* when he talks about his daughter or sees his daughter (case in point, when he was on wayne brady may 2003, and she pounced into his lap on stage)...
another thing that adorably sexy? he's NOT one of these affected types who laud their performance over everyone and think they're hot shit! he's just a regular guy who happens to have a more public type job...

I haven't watched any SG-1 yet, still--though I still have the tape that was given me of the first season. I should check that out at some point, now that I actually have, like, y'know, TIME on my hands and stuff.

But yeah, I hear you, re: RDA being a regular sort of guy. I always had that impression of him during his MacGyver years, and I'm glad to know that it's held up.

Looks like, looking at those pics at the link you gave me in the other comment, he's stayed in fantastic shape as he's gotten older. (If anything, he looks a little leaner than he did in his younger days!, whereas many men get stockier as they get older!) Good on him. :) And he's kept the lovely smile I always grooved on during MacGyver--the one I think of from a particular episode where another character talks about the "light behind his eyes".

Mm, yes, Mr. Bakula is also rather easy on the eyes as well. He is one of the main reasons I do like watching Enterprise, and why it's become my second favorite Star Trek after the original show. ^_^

Scott raced in and finished his first marathon this summer... 4h13m i do believe (or thereabouts)... not bad for the lad...
and he's one who has kept his body in PRIME condition.. then again, he has a young child (around age 5 i think) to keep him young... tis also why he doens't do a lot of appearances, he WANTS to spend as much time as possible w/ his growing children! what's not to love about that? :)
