Anticipation

In a scant 17 more days, five incredibly talented Canadians, three of which are handsome Newfoundlanders, will come to my city. They will be in a theater, and I shall go to them; yea, I shall fly forthwith to their presence and wait with great eagerness for their emergence onto the stage.

And they will be bearing instruments, which they will play with great vigor and skill, and tempo swift enough to make my head spin.

One will have a voice like a bright brass trumpet, and pound out rhythms to rattle my bones upon his drum.

One will play every instrument in the world, and look charmingly surprised when he is cheered during his accordion and violin solos.

And one will bound around the stage as though his shoes are on fire, and no one will be able to resist his bellows of "VERTICAL MOVEMENT! VERTICAL MOVEMENT!" Because he will wield stage presence with the impact of a lightning bolt. And a bouzouki. Don't forget the bouzouki, that's important!

And they will sing in glorious, full-throated rowdy harmony, and two thousand people will sing back at them. Including me.

And it will be Good.

This seems like a good opportunity to talk about the German word die Vorfreude. :-)

Ooh, that sounds like a very good and appropriate word! I'm guessing it translates to 'anticipation'? If I try to break it down it comes out sort of 'happiness for' or 'joy for'. Or possibly 'about'. Not entirely certain of the various nuances that can be applied to 'vor' without looking it up!

"Joyful anticipation" to be more precise. vor in this case means "before", so it's the happiness one feels befor something happens. Most people only know die Schadenfreude="happiness at someone else's misfortune" but Vorfreude is a so much more positive word.

Ohhhh, that is a very good word. :D Yes, I'd thought of die Schadenfreude when you mentioned this, but yes, it is exactly what I am feeling for my impending Newfoundlanders!
