No new writing tonight
Feb. 1st, 2004 01:05 amInstead, because
starfallz had asked me for a combined file for the book for converting to PDA purposes so's she could beta-read it, and also because I wanted to format it properly for manuscript purposes and get a page count so that I could get the proper sort of word count estimation that a publisher is going to look for, I have spent today going through all of Faerie Blood and formatting it up into manuscript form.
The resultant file is huge, a 600K+ document in Word, but it is at least complete. And formatted more or less properly, I think, based on what I have been able to learn from the example document kindly provided me by
mizkit. The most interesting result of this, though, is the word count estimation I got by following the guideline up on Daw Books' web site--i.e., count the number of words in 10 lines, divide that by 10, then multiply that by the number of lines on an average page. Then multiply that by the number of pages in the manuscript.
This, using a 12pt Courier New font that results in 368 pages' worth of manuscript, gets me a word count estimate of 101,200 words. Which is very definitely not the same as the 88,348 I get by adding up all the individual word counts from the chapters!
This has also meant that although I tried very hard to not pay that much attention to changing anything besides format, I couldn't help but do a cursory read of everything. I know, I know, I'm not supposed to touch the damn thing for six weeks. :) But Janis did ask me about the combined file, plus I wanted to practice formatting a manuscript correctly! And I wanted that word count.
BETA READERS: If any of you want this combined file for purposes of conversion to PDA format or printing or however else it might be easiest for you to read the story, please let me know. As previously stated, just do please make sure you keep the file where only you can get to it. :) If you want the updated file of second draft revision notes, please also sing out for that as well.
