*giggle* My favorite band. :) They are a quartet--or at least they were a quartet before their bass player retired early this year--from Newfoundland, and they play high-energetic, happyfunbouncy Celtic rock.
Well Suicide Billy, he rapped all night, All the young dudes, they carry the news, Kick’t in the head at twe-enty-five, Carry the news to his burying ground.
Tell me where is Stormy, All the young dudes, they carry the news, Tell me where is Stormy, Boogaloo dudes to his burying ground.
Sweet-looking Jimmy, he dressed like a queen, All the young dudes, they carry the news, But he can kick like a mule, it's a real mean team, Carry the news to his burying ground.

I too loyally attend GBS shows whenever they play here in Seattle, and I've gotten into the habit of going to see them in Vancouver as well! I've been anxiously watching the tour page just to see when they'll go on the road next, but they seem to have been all about the southern half of the U.S. lately. Sniffle.
I'll have to console myself with the shiny new GBS DVD as soon as I can get a copy. ^_^
Or early spring. The B'ys seem to have a way of laying low over Christmas and then going on tour again come the spring, on account of (as they joked in a band news letter once) weather sucks in St. John's. ^_^
I'll be interested in whether Murray Foster will tour with them again. Have you seen them live since Darrell Power retired? Murray Foster was a fine stand-in and was REALLY kickass joining them in "General Taylor"! :D
Murray's not a they, he's a he! He's apparently been the bass player for another band called Moxy Fruvous, who I am given to understand is sort of on hiatus at the moment. Great Big Sea's been borrowing him this past year on their tours since Darrell Power has retired.
I haven't actually heard Moxy Fruvous myself, but they are semi-regularly mentioned on Great Big Sea's message board when threads of the "if you like GBS, you'll also like..." variety crop up.
Mr. Foster seems to be a fine and talented bass player, but when I went to see the GBS show in Vancouver this past June he REALLY blew me away singing "General Taylor" along with Alan, Sean, and Bob. When they got to the final closing chord Murray let out this AMAZING deep rumbling note on the bottom of the chord and my jaw just dropped. :D
Though if you're in the market for new music, I can cheerfully recommend other Canadian bands of my acquaintance, the Fables, the Irish Descendants, the Paperboys, and La Bottine Souriante. The first two of these are a couple other Newfoundland bands, and the Paperboys are I think based out of Vancouver; they are all, like GBS, of the Celtic rock/pop variety. Though the Fables and the Irish Descendants lean a little farther towards folk, and the Paperboys sometimes go off towards bluegrass or Spanish-influenced music as well.
La Bottine Souriante is a group in Quebec that I saw perform at the same festival where I saw GBS for the first time, and they are a lot of fun. :) Sort of Cajun/zydeco/Celtic/brass all thrown together into big loud footstomping French Canadian goodness. :)
Wait, the bassist from Moxy Fruvous was sitting in with Great Big Sea and I missed it?
*sigh* Two Canadian sounds that go well together.
Moxy Fruvous, as far as I know is on permenant hiatus, as one of their members is doing a TV show on CBC (can you tell I'm an expat Canadian?) and has creative differences with the band.
Fruvous are quite good, though I've never seen them live either. They used to play Falcon Ridge folk festival each year, right up to when I started attending.
That reminds me, do you listen to Eddie from Ohio? They're a Virigina based group, quite good.
I'd heard something about those creative differences, but no details! But yeah, the bassist from Fruvous has been touring around with GBS all this past year. :) He was very warmly received, by all indications. Posts from GBS fans on the site message board have been very positive and many calls have been made for him to be Darrell Power's replacement. No official word on that though!
As far as I can tell the creative differences were "Jian's a jerk!" (I can't remember how to spell his name ... but that was about the size of it. Of course, he's got a relatively lucrative career going, even if I don't love the music he's making.
Sad that Darrell is gone, I like the way he talked to the crowd, but family comes first.
Do pick up either Portable EFO show, or Quick as good introductions to the Eddie From Ohio style.
They have a fusion style that combines rock, folk, gospel, rockabilly, singer-songwriter, etc.
Yeah, I'm going to miss Darrell as well and his performance of "Excursion Around the Bay"! The lovely and talented Mr. Doyle does a fine job with that song, but it's just not the same without Darrell. :)
Duly noted on the recommendations... and nope! The Nields are not familiar either.
The Nields are currently a sister act, they do a lot of girl rock stuff, all of their own writing, all of which is quite good. They used to be a band, with their husbands, Dave Nields and Dave Chalfand and a third Dave who was their drummer. The band broke up when one of the marriages went bad, and they've been a duet since. I highly recommend the Live in Northhampton album, which features live versions of a lot of their studio-recorded music, and gives you an impression of what they're like in concert.
While I'm plying you with performers from the Northeast, do you know of Kris Delmhorst?
And no, it's not the same without Darrell. Have you seen the "Great Big Sea on the Muppet show" thing that went around the internet a few years back?
Thanks for the recommendations--and nope, not familiar with Kris Delmhorst either. :) Now that I've gotten the writing marathon over and done with maybe I can check out some of these folks!
And "Great Big Sea on the Muppet Show"?!?! NO! I haven't seen this! :D
Yay! I've been having mental images of GBS on the Muppet Show all day!
"Hi-ho and welcome to the Muppet Show! Tonight's very special guest stars are the highly energetic folk band from the tropical island of Newfoundland: Great Big Sea! YAAAAAAAY!"
*cue squeals from female Muppets in audience*
Somewhere in there, I'm sure they'd have to do something based on the whole "tropical island of Newfoundland" schtick. ;D Visions of moose wearing Hawaiian shirts and sunglasses come to mind... hehehehehehe!
