annathepiperRussell did not get Best Actor, and Ian McKellan did not get Best Supporting. WHINE! I am not entirely unsurprised that Russell did not get Best Actor -- I strongly suspect that the BAFTAs incident torched his chances -- but Ian McKellan was just bloody well ROBBED.
I do take some consolation from LOTR taking four awards and ABM taking four as well, including Best Director and Best Picture. Though now I owe Paul beer. It was a really tough call for me between ABM and LOTR, but I was slightly more in favor of LOTR just because it blew me away in more ways than ABM did, whereas Paul was just pretty much convinced that ABM would get it based on the kind of film it is.
I think I shall just have to watch Gladiator later when the boys go to bed, just to console myself for Russell though!
And I am consoled that several very nice things were said about him by various people, Jennifer Connelly and Ron Howard and everyone else who took awards for ABM. He was called "profound" and "dazzling", and the guy accepting for Best Picture said that "we wouldn't be here if it weren't for Russell Crowe" and talked about "his amazing dedication, workmanship, and artistry". Paul jumped in with "and moving pop music"! *giggle*
And oh yeah, it's also worth mentioning, even if tangentially, that after Jam today we had the following exchange:
Monica: "You know what's going to happen? We're going to be at Folklife busking, and some person will come up to us and want to record us!"
Me: "And as long as I'm fantasizing, I want a pony!"
Paul: "As long as you're fantasizing, it'll be Russell Crowe. And he'll be naked." <Bad Aussie Accent> "You sound roight good! C'mon back t' mah studio, Ah'll produce yer first record! 'Ave you seen mah clothes?" </Bad Aussie Accent>
Dar: "YOUR record sold 140 copies in England! You went CARDBOARD!"

I'm still going to watch me some Maximus later on tonight, though, and play me Russell the Rogue in Nethack in the meantime.
