annathepiper: (Loving You Grin)
This morning I went in for a discussion with Dr. Taylor about my forthcoming radiation therapy, as well as a bit of a preliminary scanning session so that they could calibrate the machinery for my personal settings. It was all very straightforward; they kept asking me if I remembered previously discussed details and if I had any questions, and I kept assuring them no, I was good.

The scanning room was kind of neat since it had this ceiling overhead with a dome painted in sky shades, blue and purple and gray, and set with all these little star-like lights that winked slowly on and off. Very planetarium-esque, except for not actually rotating. It was cool to look at, and a nice touch from the patient's POV: something both interesting and kind of soothing to look at. Not that there was anything particularly tension-inducing about the process; as I'd been advised, Dr. Taylor drew on me a bit to lay down the boundaries of where I am to be zapped. Then the techs taped some wire to me and did the scans. And they put two little purple tattoo dots on me for later calibration, when I start the treatment in earnest.

First zappy day is 12/3, and my course of treatment will continue up until my birthday, which is a nice day to end on. So that's five times a week for seven weeks. I had them schedule me as late in the day as possible, which is going to wind up being 5:20 on some days and 5:40 on others. I'll have to work out with my boss what to do about hours, since it sounds like that on the 5:20 days I should probably be there by 5 to get into the gown and ready and everything, and there by 5:20 on the 5:40 days. Which means I should probably be leaving work by 3:30 on a fairly regular basis. I'll have to work out whether I should come in earlier, or arrange for Saturday hours, or do work from home, or what.

This promises to be fairly routine, I think. [livejournal.com profile] solarbird didn't even accompany me in today, on the grounds that emotionally speaking, this stage of the game is kind of hitting me the same way my thyroid update appointments do. And also, we're all zzzzzz from turkey yesterday anyway.

All in all, given the holiday weekend at hand, I'm pretty thankful for how things are turning out!
