Weekendery
Aug. 7th, 2005 06:06 pmFriday: Friday's most notable aspect was going with
solarbird and our ex-renter Danny to see the uncut version of an old film called Baby Face, as hosted by the Northwest Film Forum. This film had Barbara Stanwyck in it as well as a very young John Wayne, and was described to me by Dara as one of the films that got the Hayes Code instituted in Hollywood. Watching it, I was frankly stunned that it was made in its time. It was rather tame by today's standards--but by the standards of the time I can buy why people flipped. Stanwyck's character is a woman who quite literally sleeps her way to the top, pulling herself out of poverty clear up to being the wife of the president of a New York bank, and unhesitantly uses her feminine wiles to snare every single man she thinks can get her something. The really fun part of seeing the film, though, was the clips they showed afterwards of a few of the scenes they had to put into the version that got censored for its original theatrical release--turning one of the most amusing characters, a blatantly unapologetic nihilistic Nietzsche-quoting cobbler, into a 'moral authority' who's supposed to reprove Stanwyck's character for choosing the path she's chosen. And the ending that got tacked onto the released version was beyond ridiculous as well, clearly designed to not only try to 'redeem' Stanwyck's character but also to put her back in her place. Dara says that she was able to tell where most of the restored original scenes were in the uncut print--and they were many of the places where she was being the most hard-assed and 'unfeminine'.
Saturday: Helped
mamishka some with the editing of her Firefly episode guide, though as she herself has lamented, editing is extremely slow going when you're not actually able to edit the source file you've been given and have to rely on making a separate list of changes. Oof. Saturday night went to watching episode #11 of Lost, now that our Tivo is scarfing the reruns, and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. I finished knocking out another couple of my X-Files novelizations, Ruins and Ground Zero.
Sunday: Went down to the Farmers' Market with Dara and
spazzkat, and bought what's rapidly becoming our usual market fare: kettle corn, raspberries, shave ice. We also got another jar of that incredibly useful anti-stink liquid crystal goop to put in the laundry room, where we have the cat box. Most of the rest of the afternoon thus far has gone to taking a bunch more notes for Lament of the Dove, beefing up what I know about the underlying support for this first scene of Chapter 14. Tonight, perhaps, we will watch Friday night's Battlestar.
And in the meantime, gotta make with the writing.
