And now, the mandolin report
Feb. 16th, 2002 01:15 pmI am waffling about whether to take my little mandolin to the Great Big Sea show at the Showbox in April and ask Alan Doyle to sign her for me. The notion of having Alan Doyle's signature on the instrument he personally is responsible for me being inspired to purchase and learn how to play just does rather sit well with me, even if the notion of me actually screwing up the courage to ASK HIM makes me giggle at the look on my mental face as I visualize this.
Dana teased me that he might even ask me to play something in exchange for a signature. This did in fact cross my mind, though that prospect is utterly terrifying. ;D So is him actually remembering Cyn and Monica's ratting out to him about the sonnet I wrote about his hair and asking me to recite that!
But we'll see. I'd be nervous about taking Summer into a crowded place like the Showbox, because I'd be scared to let her out of my sight. Fortunately she is not a heavy instrument to carry around, and perhaps we'll have enough people with us that she could be guarded at a table until after the show.
And in related news, I appear to have discovered a second song I can sorta kinda pick my way through while I'm singing, which is "Can't Help Falling In Love". This and "Judas Cart" seem to have in common that a) they're slow, and b) they're in 3/4 time. I've been playing with other songs to try to see if I can sing them as I play, but so far the ones in 4/4 are harder for me for some reason, though I can almost manage a few bits of "Sail Those Same Oceans".
Also, my thoughts about what to play on the third verse of "Judas Cart" wound up changing again, to better fit the chord progression I worked out for that verse. I think I have something now that'll be easier for me to play at speed; now, all I have to do is figure out how to get that high G chord I discovered in there where I want it.
