Dear Peter Jackson’s Middle-Earth: I have MISSED YOU

The Internets have been shaken tonight, my children. Oh my yes, because the first trailer for The Hobbit has been given unto us. And how awesome is this? Behold:

OMG OMG OMG. Martin Freeman looking so beautiful as young Ian-Holm!Bilbo! Gandalf’s shorter, darker beard! The DWARVES OMG the dwarves and Kili and Fili and Thorin: all strangely hot for dwarves! The SONG which I cannot WAIT to hear in full deep resonance in the theater! Rivendell! Hobbiton! STING! What’s… a…. Bagginses, precioussssss? EEEEEEEEEEE!

Oh dear gods I have missed Peter Jackson’s vision of this world. I mean yeah sure, I’ve got the Lord of the Rings movies right here to be watched at any time–but OMG it makes me so happy that this is happening now too. Even if we have to wait another year for it to arrive EEEEEEEEEE!

The handling of the "Misty Mountians" song reminded me a lot of the singing style used by cantors singing Jewish prayers --- so much so that I mis-heard the first few syllables ("Far over the") as "baruch atah". Which is appropriate, since Tolkien modeled the dwarves on Jews.

And yes, Martin Freeman is absolutely adorable, and Fili, Kili, and Thorin are quite hot, especially when singing.

I KNOW! Also: OMG Old!Bilbo and Frodo as well and hell I don't care if the framing story they're clearly doing isn't canon OMG we get to see Frodo again, happy young pre-Ring Frodo! \0/

Oh wow, I didn't actually know this. That's awesome. And gives me more love for the handling of said song! I always loved the glimpses of song we got in the extended versions of the LotR trilogy, and I'll be delighted to see what they do with other songs in these two new movies. :D

Martin Freeman looks just like a young Ian Holm!!! (since I always thought that Ian Holm was the only actor who could play Bilbo, forever and ever amen, this is -- I have no words for how happy this makes me).

Oh, I cannot wait for this. I really can't. 2012 is going to be one long year.

Anyway, I was just going to say that Martin Freeman looks and sounds just like Ian Holm, whom I have long thought is the only actor who could ever play Bilbo, so this makes me extremely happy.

2012 is going to be a long year, though...

Yeah, I'm all "but but but that's TWELVE WHOLE MONTHS AWAY AUGH". But on the other hand, no matter what 2012 chooses to throw at us in the interim, we get to end it with this movie!

Not to mention that at some point before then we'll get a trailer WITH SMAUG. \0/

My Tumblr friends have recently given me a GINORMOUS crush on Richard Armitage, which means I spent a good part of the trailer clapping in glee when he appeared as Thorin. :D

But all in all, NEXT DECEMBER IS TOO FAR AWAY. The end.

Half the people I see on the Internet seem to swoon over Mr. Armitage! Clearly I need to watch something he's been in, just to see what all the fuss is about. ;)

And GOD YES 2012 had better distract me with a WHOLE LOT OF SHINY if it doesn't want me to spend all of it going WHY ISN'T IT DECEMBER YET SO I CAN SEE THIS MOVIE?

Well it's not entirely awesome, because, y'know, the dwarves are all obsessed with gold and vengeance.

I think Tolkien himself had second thoughts about this, so Gimli in Lord of the Rings is much less like an antisemitic caricature.

Of course, Tolkien had his issues with assigning general characteristics to all of the Middle-Earth races, as many persons more inclined to study such things in depth than I have determined. Still, though, it's good to have the context for these things.
