You can root the new one and run Android Honeycomb (I think- it may have been Froyo) on it from an SD card. I've actually seen that done. I'm dual booting my Nook Colour from an SB to run either Froyo (slightly more stable) or Honeycomb (more fun to muck around in), and by popping out the SD card and rebooting, it's still an excellent e-reader at comparable size/weight to a trade paperback. I've heard rumours that there's an Ubuntu kernel someone's compiled for it as well, but haven't gone to that extreme yet.
