All hands, brace for fangirling!
Mar. 15th, 2010 02:40 pmFor those of you who haven’t seen this already, here’s the latest trailer for the forthcoming Robin Hood movie. Look for none other than Alan The Doyle, showing up around the 0:54 mark or so–with a line, even!
Is it May yet? Is it May yet? Is it May yet? Also, elf needs icons, BADLY. And desktop backgrounds! And, Big Trailer is Big, so behind the cut it goes!

Date: 2010-03-16 02:07 am (UTC)Russell's been a huge GBS fan for some time now--enough that when he took his band on tour in 2001, they even covered a GBS song. And around 2005 or so he showed up at one of their shows, was welcomed backstage, and he and the B'ys hit it off quite well. Alan produced Russell's last album (and it's hands down the best music Russell's done), and he's an extended member of Russell's current band; in exchange, Russell's actually helped write on the last couple GBS albums. If you check the liner notes on Fortune's Favour, you'll see that Russell's credited as one of the writers for "Company of Fools".
So I'm pretty sure this was a matter of Russell going "oi, mate, wanna be in my movie? I need an Allan a'Dale!" And one presumes that given that Ridley Scott generally doesn't suck as a director and having two Oscar winners of Russell's and Cate Blanchett's caliber in the cast, Alan got judged to have a suitable level of competency at acting to actually be taken on as one of the Merry Men. :) I'm quite looking forward to seeing if, in fact, he can act!

Date: 2010-03-16 02:40 am (UTC)Yeah, I became a fan of Russell and a fan of GBS totally independently in the same year (2000, just after Gladiator came out), and I about fell over dead when I heard Russell was a GBS fan! And since I actually caught one of his band's shows, I even got to see him do the GBS song: "How Did We Get From Saying I Love You?" Which was ridiculously delightful. <3
I also squealed when I saw Russell's last movie, State of Play, in which he's bellowing along with GBS' own "Paddy Murphy"!
And did I mention Russell's actually shown up a couple of times at GBS shows for a surprise encore? ;)

If you're up for it though I also recommend the original BBC miniseries version, which is excellent. Since I've seen them both I can say that Russell's version did a decent job adapting the BBC story to a 2-hour, US-based format.
You're very welcome!
