So, yeah. 2008 by and large was full of a great deal of suck. The biggest part of this was of course the whole Breast Cancer thing, the Big Fat Fucking Nuisance, carried over from 2007, but 2008 did its part to take that ball and run with it. There were job issues. There were economic and political issues. There were particularly nasty challenges rising up in the musical side of fandom, what with not one, not two, but three singers beloved of fandom all needing help.
On the other hand, there were a few strong things in its favor. I do have a shiny new job, and I did after all sell a book.
solarbird and I did remain fairly healthy despite the BFFN. We have continued to have a roof over our heads, and although money's been tight, we've continued to put food on our table and regularly pay our bills. And we were able to do our small parts to help
filkertom, AJA, and
s00j. But all in all I'm not sorry to give 2008 its walking papers.
Last night Dara and
spazzkat and I went out for a pleasant dinner last night with friends, one of whom was visiting and the other of whom turned out to not only have been employed at Big Fish for a year--so I expect to see him around the place--but to also have had a stint on the Media Player team at Microsoft before I was there. So that was cool.
Then we went over to
kathrynt and
llachglin's place for the Burning of Things That Suck. It was very low-key this year since Q was out for much of the evening with a chorale performance. But she did eventually join us and Erik, and brought
emmacrew and
wrog and their younger son along with her. We had a nice toast at midnight and pleasant conversation all around.
Today, it's the obligatory day off, and I've been puttering around the house just straightening stuff up. I have re-organized my CDs. I have put away some stuff. And I have discovered to my pleasure that my sister
wildshadowstar included in the holiday card she sent to us a $25 Barnes and Noble card. (Thanks, Becky! <3)
So yeah, a quiet start to the new year. But promising, maybe. 2009, I think you and I can do business.
