Great Big Sea gets a new member and Anna explodes in fangirly squee

I heard rumors last night that the lovely and talented Mr. Crowe was spotted at a Great Big Sea show in D.C.--and today, checking in on the OKP, I am finding reports of this confirmed. Apparently Russell popped out during an encore, making the audience and the press who were present go absolutely nuts; one poster is saying that even the security guys were taking pictures on their cellphones. I'm not finding pics yet up there, nor video, but I am desperately hoping somebody scarfed some video. Because I mean, damn.

Russell apparently did "Folsom Prison Blues", and then stayed on stage as Carbon Leaf also came out and joined the B'ys for a final encore. Wow. Russell's take of "Folsom Prison Blues" is one of the tastiest things he's ever recorded, and the thought of it with GBS' instrument mix and backup vocals...

Ahem. I'll be in my bunk.

Oooh, OKP poster says she has video. ALL of "Folsom Prison Blues" and the second half of "Molly Malone", where GBS, Carbon Leaf, and Russell were all on the stage at the same time. She just has to get it posted.

Let me tell you about Russell's take of "Folsom Prison Blues".

It made kathrynt sit up and take notice at that TOFOG show we went to in 2001. She even said it blew the roof off the Roseland for her.

And Dara has the take of it Russell included on a prior album in her rotation on iTunes.

There is apparently video of last night's encore, one of the OKP posters says she has the whole thing and just has to get it uploaded!

Extremely. I have been fantasizing about this ever since I learned Russell was a GBS fan, way back in 2001. And Alan's already played with Russell's band, it's about high time Russell played with his. :D

Russell's a GBS fan? How cool!

He IS! He's apparently been a GBS fan for ages--the way I understand it is, he discovered them when he was making the movie Mystery Alaska. Was enough of a raving fan of theirs that he covered a GBS song during his band's tours in 2001.

In recent years he's actually met up with them, and hit it off well enough with Alan Doyle that they're huge buddies now, and Alan's joined the current incarnation of his band and even produced an album for him. I've been fantasizing about Russell joining a GBS show ever since. ;)

Already mentioning this on the MUSH, but for general reference of anybody else reading this thread: the best options to get the album at this point are either Amazon or iTunes. Other Ways of Speaking was released for sale in stores, but copies are pretty thin on the ground since it's several years old. :)

Apparently, Russell's in DC right now filming a movie--so THAT'S how they managed to sync this up. I am indeed full of jealousy for all the lucky SOBs who got to be at that show. But the YouTube video helps soothe my envy. ;)

This is me admiring your restraint! ;) Hee, I only just found out this morning that Russell was in DC filming that movie, yeah, and then I went DUH, of course, this is why they actually managed to pull this off.

Clearly, GBS needs to play more wherever Russell is filming. Or, he needs to film more wherever they're playing. In either case, this needs to include SEATTLE.

GBS is back in Northern Virginia in August at Wolf Trap. Clearly someone needs to lure Russell back to the area for some political thriller or American Rugby League or something.
