Jam Report #68: 2/3/08
Feb. 3rd, 2008 06:40 pmIn which
technoshaman does not join us but
pocketnaomi does; in which
sutures1 returns with her much-welcomed dulcimer; in which further group work is done on Dara's pieces to nifty effect; and in which I have enough of a brain back that I can actually play stuff! Songs: "Goin' Up", "Lukey", "Elf Glade", "Leaffall", "Web of Love".
The consequence of jamming on Super Bowl Sunday is that
technoshaman, for the first time since we instituted this round of Jams at the Murk, did not join us.
cflute did, however, and this time around also brought
pocketnaomi, another member of the Big Green Monster household. (Naomi did not play, but expressed contentment at listening, at petting the cats, and at the provided tasty post-jam tart, on which I will elaborate at the end of this report. Mmm, tart!) Moreover, after missing the last several Jams,
sutures1 came back with her sorely missed dulcimer.
Ellen was first, in fact, and so just because Dara and I already had instruments out, Dara and I whipped through "Goin' Up" and "Lukey". I explained to Ellen that I can play the chord line for the first of these but have trouble with the lyrics, though I was able to at least come in on the choruses; Ellen noted she could hear some harmony on those parts. Clearly, I shall have to share the recorded GBS version with her. ;)
And then we played "Lukey", although with capos, as per earlier learnings on this song. This led into Dara and I telling Ellen the story of which various GBS songs we played in the previous round of Jams, including
kathrynt,
ssha, and
mamishka coming out with the Chamber Music version of "Old Black Rum". And that in turn led into me beginning to teach Dara the chords to that... though we didn't have time to do more than the initial verse before Callie and Naomi showed up.
But that was okay. After the initial round of introductions all around and the obligatory introduction of Dara's recent music changes to Ellen, we got down to business.
Next up was "Elf Glade", since I was noodling around on it while the others were talking, and we settled on that to do next since I was noodling on it anyway. That I now have a significant amount of brain back was in evidence with this since I almost played the whole thing all the way through this time, and my ability to handle the between-verse riffs was much better than it has been in a while. There's a tough bit at the very end in the last verse that's still giving me trouble, too. I'm not there yet--but it's coming. Callie and I did not half badly with the vocals as well.
Then we jumped over to play with "Leaffall" for a while, now that we had a dulcimer to throw into the mix. This was very satisfying, since Ellen took what I'd started with writing out the chords for this, and with Callie's help, finished up the whole song. Ellen further contributed how the song felt very Swedish-waltzy to her, which let her come up with some very nice little guitar strum patterns to go with it. I tried to follow up on that while she jumped over to the dulcimer. This wound us up with Dara on Popcorn, her preferred flute for this piece; Callie on Big Kid, her bass flute; Ellen on the dulcimer; and finally, me on the guitar. It started to work quite, quite well.
Last up: "Web of Love", the Echo's Children song, since Callie was eager to work with Ellen on that again. We went through this a few times, and had a bit of discussion about what to do with the fermata on the final line; Ellen and I initially were trying to hold it out for too many counts. I got a little shaky on the bridging chords between the chorus and verse, too, but we worked it through. I was furthermore amused that I started eying the vocals that were written in; I've actually heard the recorded version of this song now, and there were lyrics right in front of me, so. But we'll have to see if we want any vocals in here. Maybe this will be a question to settle in further sessions.
Naomi was assured that she would be welcome to come and listen in on further Jams, and even asked about her parents participating--though this had to be set aside unfortunately since the expected weekend of their visit will be when Dara and I are at Norwescon. But! The next Jam did get nailed down for the 17th.
The pie this time around was not technically pie--it was a tart. Specifically, a key lime white chocolate tart, purchased from Thriftway, which came through again in the Extremely Tasty Pies and Pie-Like Objects department. I figure hey, it was shaped vaguely like a pie, that was close enough.
