... things haven't been all bad!
Kudos must go out to
janne, who kindly sent me the long-coveted a-ha CD Analogue as a trade for the first DVD of Avatar: The Last Airbender. Since she'd been looking for something new for her kid to watch, we here at the Murk felt Avatar would suit nicely. We're hoping Janne and her daughter both enjoy the adventures of Aang; we certainly do. Heck, Aang has even infiltrated my Nethack playing, as he is now my default name for a character in the Monk class. ^_^
As for the CD, it's quite listenable and at least one track on it made me actively swoon; it's good to hear that while Morten Harket may not have quite the vocal punch he has in times past, he certainly does still have that clarion range. I'll need to give it a few more listens, but so far my rough opinion is that yes, I like it better than its precedessor, Lifelines. Not sure whether I like it better than Minor Earth Major Sky, which has established its character for me pretty well; Lifelines is sort of a non-entity to me. I also note that on one of those final tracks on the new one, I found myself thinking that the boys of a-ha sounded almost Beatles-like. This was not a bad thing. But definitely a little odd.
Meanwhile, I am still headlong in the mad rush of Classic Doctor catchup.
spazzkat helpfully dug out all the tapes of his Dalek-flavored episodes, ranging from First Doctor clear down to Seventh, minus Second. I have so far watched and enjoyed Fourth Doctor's "Genesis of the Daleks" immensely, and we've found ourselves thinking that there's quite a bit of Four in David Tennant's portrayal of Ten. Something about his vocal delivery in particular makes it sound like Tennant is specifically trying to channel Baker. Early on in "Genesis of the Daleks", I found the sound of Baker's voice oddly Ten-like in delivery, only of course much deeper.
We've also watched Seventh Doctor's "Remembrance of the Daleks", which was amusing to me. I remembered his opening credits once I saw them--ohhh, the MIDI-ness of that arrangement of the theme. ;) Hearing that only sparks up my mad love for the new, full-orchestra version, I must say. But it was very gigglesome nonetheless hearing the 80's-flavored incidental music during that episode as well--
solarbird quipped at us, "They're going to run into MacGyver going the other way!" ^_^ Also? Two thumbs up for Ace, cheerfully blowing the tops off of Daleks with large weapons, carrying around highly explosive substances in her enormous backpack, and in general making things explode.
Dara and I have picked up a Second Doctor DVD, "The Invasion", which is intriguing as it's one of those stories for which they'd lost the actual episodes. They had only an audio track left, so they went and filled in the missing bits with animation. So you start off with animation-Doctor and suddenly jump to live-action partway through. It's a little jarring, but also kind of neat! And it's worth noting as well that the animation style seems to match the snippets of the Tenth Doctor animated thing I've seen going around: "The Infinite Quest". (Which I must also see, if I can find a complete copy of the thing.)
During the weekend network crisis we happened to find that the local public broadcasting station KBTC was having another Doctor marathon--so we caught the six-part Fourth Doctor episode "The Seeds of Doom". Fun. Lots of over-the-top villain goodness, lots of cheesy monster fun with hapless victims turning into shambling plant monsters, lots of Four being snarky about humanity (he was clearly in a Stupid Monkeys mood this storyline), and lots of Action Doctor! Jumping through skylights to save Sarah Jane! Tackling shifty-eyed henchmen (and, I might add, at least briefly seeming to break the neck of said henchman, but then the guy got up. Darn ;) ). The guys running the marathon happened to mention that they're going to run the last three Ninth Doctor episodes and then jump back to Tom Baker--amusingly, with the episode "Pyramids of Mars", to which that last Fifth Doctor novel read was the sequel. So that will be fun.
And I've got a veritable pile of random Classic Doctor novels to read as well--several borrowed from Paul but several purchased on my own as well. This will be fun, though I'm going to have to pace myself and spread out the Doctory goodness across my reading for a while.
In non-Doctor-media news, we went and saw Ocean's Thirteen Friday night. I hadn't actually seen the first two movies to go with this, though I have seen the original Ocean's Eleven with Frank Sinatra and his boys. This new movie was full of pretty men doing swank, smooth things, and was generally quite enjoyable. Also, a very groovalicious soundtrack that makes you feel like you ought to be holding a drink and looking stylish.
More later, as I am still working on getting us a new and improved backup process in place. Thanks to the network crisis over the weekend I have totally missed a lot of recent LJ postings, so if anything entertaining happened that I need to know about, drop a comment!
