BSG 2.18, "Downloaded", is up for Best Dramatic Presentation, Short Form! But here's the kicker--it's up against not one, not two, but four episodes of Doctor Who: "Girl in the Fireplace", "School Reunion", and the thermonuclear pairing of "Army of Ghosts" and "Doomsday".

Damn. I mean, damn. That's hard.

Out of the Who eps, I'm having a genuinely hard time deciding between GitF and the two-parter... but I think I'm with you.

But then I have to put it up against "Downloaded", and, well, day-em. I think my brain just went pop at the thought.

Personally, I'd not vote for BSG anyway, but I gave up on it half way into S1...

I just watched School Reunion and GitF. They were both pretty wonderful. I didn't even know who the hell Sarah Jane Smith *was*, and the Doctor's reaction to seeing her still got me all sniffly!

Yeah, I suspect the bits with Sarah Jane in that episode were what catapulted it into the running. Lots of mileage there for longer-term Who fans!

I think GitF is a stronger story over all, though.

The new episodes of Doctor Who are stunningly good. I wasn't a Who fan either--I'd just watched all the older Doctors kind of over the shoulders of spazzkat and solarbird for the longest time. But then the Ninth Doctor showed up, and, well, wow. :) Tenth Doctor, by and large, has been even better. There is much to be said for decent acting, fine scripts, special effects that don't suck, and way snazzier opening credits. Long story short? I recommend checking them out if you get a chance, they are what actually sold me on becoming a Who fan.

All that said? "Downloaded" does kick serious ass, and my inner BSG fangirl really loves the sound of "two-time Hugo award winning Battlestar Galactica". ;)

Wow, what a terribly hard choice! I'm thinking the commenter before me that said the Who!eps will just split the votes so that BSG comes out ahead might be right but my vote would be for GitF hands down. Humor, heartbreak and a bit with a horse..what's not to love?

OK. My first hunch was to choose either Downloaded or Doomsday, with GitF third, and School Reunion a distant fourth. I'll stick with dismissing School Reunion, which is a fairly ordinary episode except for the nostalgia around Sara Jane's return. It really doesn't deserve the nomination.

As good as Doomsday is, it relies upon two seasons worth of character development, and really doesn't stand on its own. So that--and Army of Ghosts with it--really don't deserve the nod. Otherwise, I think Doomsday is the clear winner.

I really like the stories in both GitF and Downloaded, both of which stand on their own. And while I enjoyed Downloaded more and I'm a much bigger BSG fan, I think in the end GitF is the better and more original story. It's also the one most likely to appeal to non-fans.

"Army of Ghosts" and "Doomsday" being a two-parter, they are a package deal here--they claim one of the nominations together. But overall yeah, I agree with your point that they don't really stand alone as a story. I suspect part of the reason they're on the roster is because of the ZOMG-sniffle-inducing ending, too.

I think I'm with you re: GitF vs. "Downloaded", though.

Yeah, I could see a vote split happening here. It'll be interesting--a Who two-parter got the Best Short Dramatic Presentation last year, but then again, BSG has one under its belt now with "33" from Season One. So we have two Hugo-winning shows facing off here! So very cool.

*giggle!* Well, I suppose there's the possibility that Stargate, an episode of which claims the fifth nomination, will sweep the entire vote. ;)

Seasons 2 and 3 of BSG aren't quite as tight as Season 1, but there are gems to be had, and "Downloaded" is one of them. But I'm thinkin' GitF is a stronger story. It'll be fun to see how this plays out.
