Dunno if John Williams still does the screen projection thing 'cause he's "old school" or because that technique is still in general use, but I saw some "making of" stuff that showed him doing it for Star Wars I: There Should Have Been Only Three. My point? Not sure I have your back on "in that era". Significance? Some amount immeasurably larger than zero.
