Famous people meme

mizkit: Name the famous people you've met or seen at a close distance. Feel free to post this in your journal or to make comments in mine.
Musicians
* All of the original four members of Great Big Sea, spotted in the pub they occasionally visit after Seattle shows. I have spoken directly with both Alan Doyle and Séan McCann.
* Keith Roberts, lead singer of the Young Dubliners, after the show they played with Great Big Sea and Seven Nations in 2002.
jessicac was getting a copy of their album autographed, and I told him they'd put on a hell of a show.
* Heather Alexander, at several science fiction conventions. I've asked her for her autograph directly, and once almost got to jam with her and Joe Bethancourt at a room party, except I chickened out when she tried to get me to play something on the flute I was carrying around in my backpack.
*
filkertom, since he is actually an old friend of my friend and former housemate
amethyst_dancer. I actually tried to sing a filk I wrote myself with him. Which was scary. ;)
* Other well-known filkers I have seen up close singing and occasionally talked to: Murray Porath, Bill Roper, Leslie Fish, Dr. Jane, Barry and Sally Childs-Helton, Mike Stein, Bill Sutton, Mitchell Burnside-Clapp
Actors and Actresses
* Russell Crowe, on the streets of downtown Portland, prior to the 2001 TOFOG show at the Roseland.
* Richard Hatch, when we went to Worldcon in L.A. in 1996 and he was one of several at a panel attended by several actors.
* Jeffrey Pierce, the dude who plays Charlie Jade in the TV show of the same name, which has yet to air for American audiences. This was again at a science fiction convention, where he and the show's producer were at a panel about noir-flavored SF.
* Jewel Staite, Kaylee from Firefly, when she showed up at the Serenity sneak preview showing that
mamishka,
jessicac, and I attended in Vancouver. Meems asked her for an autograph while I was standing right next to her. She is very tiny, and very, very pretty!
* David Duchovny, who we all know and love as Agent Mulder, when he was on hand to do a Q&A after a screening of his film The House of D here in Seattle. Very wryly personable.
Authors and Artists
* Richard and Wendy Pini, in an autograph line at a comic book store, and at Westercon in Spokane.
* Julie Czerneda, author of quite a few SF novels, at the 2005 NASFiC when I asked her for her autograph and told her her writing inspired mine.
* Neil Gaiman, who did a reading at Norwescon once.
* Anne McCaffrey, who I actually tried to interview for
solarbird's Low Orbit fanzine, way, way back in the day. This was, I believe, at Draconis in Louisville.
*
mizkit! Who might not be technically famous quite yet, but she is well on her way to making a name for herself in SF/F fandom, and I'll get to say I knew her in the day when she was a Two Moons MUSH Strongbow-oglin' fangirl. ;)
* Assorted authors and editors and agents spotted and occasionally spoken with at Writer's Weekend:
jaylake,
alg,
claireeddy, Evan Fogelman, Rebecca York, Jacqueline Carey,
jimbutcher, and more.
* Phil Foglio, at assorted conventions, and his spouse and the rest of his Girl Genius crew. Most recently, doing amusing radio play performances of Girl Genius stories at Norwescon.
Comedians
* Lewis Black, not too long ago when he showed up at the Third Place Commons in Lake Forest Park to promote his new book.
* Eddie Izzard at a live show in a small theater in downtown Seattle.
Huh! Way longer list than I expected! I think that's everybody I can think of off the top of my head, though. ^_^

Date: 2006-11-18 10:09 pm (UTC)And I am quite kindly disposed to Mr. Hatch these days, thanks to his excellent performances as Tom Zarek in the new BSG. ^_^

Date: 2006-11-19 04:05 pm (UTC)Some of the comic artists I've met at the Raptus comic con here in Bergen include:
Will Eisner
Jeff Smith
Bud Grace
Don Rosa
Mike Collins
This year: "Over the Hedge" creators Michael Fry and T Lewis.
And lots more.
Actors? Well, I've got to include Mike Jittlov. :)
I've been within three feet of Jimmy Carter (although he probably didn't even notice me), and bumped into Trey Parker a few months ago.
I've met quite a few *Norwegian* celebrities. I think by now I can consider writer Gunnar Staalesen, if not a "friend" at least an acquaintance. And is my other writer friend Trude Brænne Larssen a celebrity? Her books can be found in kiosks all over the country.
Well, I think I'll stop here now. I've had quite a few "met in the street/stores etc." encounters. I think Norwegian celebrities are not generally as secluded as American ones, making these kinds of meetings less of a deal.
Oh, yeas, one embarrassing thing. I exited a diner, and passed someone I thought I knew in the door, so I automatically said "Hi!" Two seconds later I realized that it was singer Jan Eggum.
