Biking to work in May

Hrmm. I am informed by maps of the Burke-Gilman trail that the trail ends right around 11th Avenue NW and NW 45th Street, in Ye Land of Fremont. I am further informed by the Metro bus trip planner that if I chose to, I could then go .4 miles from there to 15th and Leary, where I could pick up the 15 and ride that down to 1st and Bay, which is within a few blocks of Real. Or, I could just follow 15th on the bike straight down to Elliott, which leans directly to Real itself.

I am very tempted to see if I can bike this, if I have to come into work tomorrow anyway. It would be nice to be able to commute by bike, and tomorrow would be a good day to try it if I want to try to do the Bike to Work thing in May.

This requires investigation!

Rumor has it (i.e. I read somewhere on some DOT website, but I haven't gone there to find out) that, due to some construction work around the Fremont Bridge, the Burke-Gilman is (or maybe will be and isn't quite yet, not sure) diverted onto a semi-arterial road for a few blocks.

I don't know how much of a pain in the ass it is, but just something to be aware of.

cow is right, I think, about the temporary move of the Burke-Gilman. I don't know how far it has moved, though, or for how long.

Riding a bike down 15th is suicide, I think. However, a friend of negihama's stayed with us for a month last summer and rode to work downtown every day. She rode all the way down to the Ballard Locks, crossed somewhere around there, rode around the northeast side of Magnolia, and then got on a trail somewhere near Interbay. That trail goes through Myrtle Edwards Park and ends at the beginning of the waterfront. Very close to Real.

Or you could at least ride to somewhere north of the ship canal and then put your bike on a bus for the last little bit. You just need to get it off before you get in the free-ride zone.

You can actually debark it at the first stop in the ride-free... which should be right on top of Real anyway, or within a couple blocks.

Thanks for the input about 15th. That's very valuable to know. Sounds like I really want to avoid that option, then. :|

I did check the possible bus options, yeah--the 15 would get me from 15th and Leary to within a few blocks of Real.

I did look up the data on the 15, as I mentioned in the post--it sounds like that might be the best option for me to pursue, then. :)

Alternately I could maybe get off the trail somewhere in the U-district and pick up the 372 to come downtown, which would work during the week. Sounds like some form of trail + bus would be my best bet.

When I was living at 75th and 15th (in Ballard, ya betcha!) I used to ride the trail that kent_s mentions all the time. You end up being on a scary part of 15th very briefly (and I should mention that sidewalks are very hip this year).

The trail itself cuts through -- amongst other things -- piers and trainyards and is really kind of interesting.
