Doing the dance of Bored
Mar. 8th, 2006 04:43 pmThings are deeply, deeply slow at work today; I've spent most of the day reading posts on the RealArcade forums, where I am now one of the moderators. Not that I post much, but I got asked to monitor the forums just to look for occasional tech-support-y type questions. I've even answered one already, so the experience has been at least a little useful. But since I've hit a lot of the new posts there, now it's time for LJ!
I forgot to mention that I made a new purchase over the weekend--a tiny black backpack. This is my attempt to compromise between needing to minimize the amount of extraneous crap I carry around, and needing to have something big enough to carry the things I consider vital. I.e., my iPod, my iPaq, and a paperback book. I was bummed that Bergman Luggage, the place I went to in Northgate Mall, no longer carries Kipling bags--I was looking forward to getting one of those. (I'm partial to the cute little toy monkeys that decorate each one, what can I say?) So I got a Jansport bag instead. Specifically, the half-pint daypack, in black corduroy.
Working pretty well so far, though you'd know that just as I switch over to using this thing, the weather around here gets foul. I'm going to have to get a new umbrella, I think, one that can fold up small enough to fit into the daypack. My current umbrella doesn't cut it, and it's starting to wear out anyway.
Downloaded Russell's new tracks, "Testify" and "Breathless", off iTunes last night. "Testify" has a really good beat to it, though the lyrics kind of make me go "er, what now?" Like "Mickey" off of MHMH, surprisingly religious kind of theme to it (Russell's religious--I knew this already from his appearance on Inside the Actor's Studio, but it still kind of makes me go 'who knew?'), but when I went and actually read the lyrics and especially the last verse, the song really kind of more made me think of The Quick and the Dead. It's very... Cort, almost. I could easily see that little ditty telling about what might have happened if Cort had faked being baptized as an excuse to make a jailbreak. ;)
"Breathless", on the other hand, is yet another of those surprisingly sweet ballads that Russell can do every so often, that I listen to and go "whoa, the boy can do high notes". I have heard him do this a few times now, and it still surprises me that he can sing a song with that kind of sweetness.
Meanwhile, I also downloaded the new GBS podcast! I continue to love these guys. ^_^ And this podcast was more fun than some of its predecessors, thanks to the B'ys offering us snippets of songs that didn't make it onto previous albums--so we get to hear bits of them singing that nobody had ever heard before. Really neat. Also, many giggles for Séan snarking about how all his songs got voted off the album. Hee hee hee.
Séan's remark about his learning to play "Hold Me Steady Freddy" (I believe it was) was cute, too--"like podcasting, but with guitars".
Bob made a Narnia joke! Somehow, that seems entirely appropriate for him.
And many, many giggles for Séan whispering into the mike, "Alan watches Brokeback Mountain every day!" Muahahaha.
Let's see, what else... last night I discovered that I can take the 308 from downtown and get to Lake Forest Park Town Center. I may make this my new evening bus just because it seems to run a lot less crowded than the 522 or the 312, and it gets me home in a similar ballpark of time. It requires me to do the long walk in the evening because that's as close as it gets to Kenmore, but that's okay; a lot of the time I do the long walk anyway.
And to my complete and utter lack of surprise, snow fell out of the forecast for the end of this week. We're still getting a lot of rain and wind and ick, though. We'll have to see how it holds up tonight.
Tuesday evening miles: 2.4
Wednesday morning miles: 1.6
Miles out of Hobbiton: 765.4
Miles out of Rivendell: 307.4
Miles to Lothlórien: 156.6
