Weekend of more media
Jan. 8th, 2006 02:51 pmYesterday I took a jaunt down to the U-district to meet up with
mamishka and have one more viewing of Kong. This was satisfying for the both of us, as we were quite happy to spend time ogling Mr. Brody and Mr. Kretschmann. Also, Meems and I are in agreement that the latter would be an excellent casting choice for her Star Wars MUSH character Paul Nighman. (It amuses me quite a bit that not only does SW1 have its own Wiki now, but Paul has his own page on it! And it wasn't even written by Mimi!)
Last night
spazzkat,
solarbird, and I watched the new War of the Worlds flick. I cannot begin to top Dara's picoreview of it, which was and I quote: "My god, it's full of crap!" Nor can I top her rant on the sucktitude of this film. I will simply say that oh my, that movie was bad.
In the meantime I finished off Rhys Bowen's Murphy's Law, which didn't do much for me. It didn't suck per se, but I had a hard time really buying it, which prevented me from enjoying it all that much.
Mostly I found myself having a hard time getting into the head of heroine Molly, who seemed remarkably blithe and nonchalant for someone who starts off the book on the run because she's just killed a man. One of the reviewers for this book on Amazon.com says that Bowen really should have shown the scene where Molly killed the guy who was trying to assault her--and I agree. It would have made for a much stronger beginning and made me a lot more likely to sympathize with this girl. But I also wish that the fact that she's killed a man would have been dealt with in a bit more, well, depth. And I would have liked to have seen her wrestle on camera with what to do about it--to have been shown some reasons why she couldn't turn for help to her family or anyone else in the village, why she ultimately had to flee to America. As it was, it felt like a superficial excuse to get her travelling in secret.
Nor did I really buy how she managed to get to America in the first place--because a complete stranger basically said to her, "Hi, I know I don't know you or anything, but I'm supposed to be going to America tomorrow except I've got consumption, so can you please take my children to my husband kthxbye!" Doesn't this woman have any kin or friends of her own that she might have trusted with the important task of sending her little ones off to their father, people she might have trusted just a touch more than a complete stranger pulled in off the street? Sheesh.
Thursday evening miles: 1.4
Friday miles: 3.45
Saturday miles: 2.0
Miles out of Hobbiton: 601.65
Miles out of Rivendell: 143.65
Miles to Lothlórien: 320.35
