Evan Fogelman says no

Just got a form rejection letter from Evan Fogelman in today's mail. Mrf.

Nothing much else to say about it since it was a very terse form letter, but at least it wasn't Luna saying no yet. And I have yet to hear from Nadia Cornier.

This is me doggedly squaring my shoulders and diving back into the notes for Lament, to keep at it!

Actually, I just finished reading a Catherine Asaro novel from Luna, and I really like that particular publishing company. Here's hoping!

Was it a full package to Fogelman or just a query package? He rejected my query flat out -- I think he's only fishing for fantasy if he's absolutely wild about it. Either that, or he's got a very distinct idea of what he wants to represent. So who knows.

I'm sure Luna will love it. The tidbit I saw of your writing was beautiful.

Oh, and Nadia Cornier took 35 days to reject my query + 3 chapters, so that might help with the time-frame. :)

It was a partial--three chapters and the synopsis. I did the pitch/query at Writer's Weekend face to face, and he asked me for the partial package.

I have no problems with him not being absolutely wild about my writing; that's totally fine. One does want an agent that's wild about one's writing, after all. :)

Still holding out for that answer from Luna, yeah... though if you're going by what you saw of Lament, that might not necessarily be a fair comparison. Different works, there. Faerie Blood isn't so lyrical since it's an urban fantasy rather than an epic, and the style I went for in that one is a lot more straightforward. 'Specially since I wrote it in first person.

The only work I've read so far by Luna has been mizkit's, but from how I've been seeing how they've treated her (i.e., very well!) as an author, I'd love to be one of theirs. Besides, it'd be Beyond Cool to be published through the same people she is. :) Here's hoping, indeed!

I get a very good vibe off them, between what I have learned of them from Kit and the kind of material in their lineup in general. Here's hoping they like Faerie Blood, anyway, because the other ideas I have bubbling up out of my brain and demanding writing attention don't fall into the guidelines for their line! Otherwise I'd be considering sending other pieces to them as well. :)

He rejected me flat-out with a terse two sentence letter after asking for full off a pitch.

Don't feel bad. If you want my take, Evan only wants stuff he knows exactly how to sell. Can't say I blame him. Agenting is hard enough without working on projects you don't know what to do with.

Still, it bites. Anyhow, salesman's law of averages and all that. Every 'no' gets you that much closer to the 'yes'. And besides, after hearing your fanfic, I know you'll sell something.

irysangel gave me a similar take on Evan, indeed--and I don't feel too terribly bad about it, happily. I'm absolutely on board with the idea that any agent or editor really needs to have that subjective "spark" leap out to them from a work, and hey, if I don't necessarily seize a given agent or editor, I'm good with that. :)

And *beam*, glad you liked that fanfic bit. I have no idea if/when I will have time to finish the story, because I have barely enough time in my day to work on the original fic I wish to sell--but that story's a big enough presence in the back of my head still that I will get back to it eventually. I will either finish it, or heavily adapt it into a new, original work (though that'll be REALLY hard). I like Jen too much as a character to not get her all the way through her story. :)
