There are two varieties of Brit humor... there's the over-the-top stuff that shows like "Benny Hill" does, and then there's the brilliantly understated stuff like what you described... Monty jumps up and down on the "good" side of the line; Red Dwarf... is just a bit much sometimes. Although the episode with the toaster was just hilarious.

And, yeah, the American versions of BBC shows just don't quite measure up. Although "Whose Line Is It, Anyway?" got awfully close with Drew Carey... but still. There's just something about a British accent in the delivery...
