Mod review: Carved Brink, revisited

My next playthrough post is going to be another one from Nona’s playthrough, and I am super behind on her in particular. I left off in the middle of running Carved Brink with her.

Y’all may recall that I put up a review post about that mod, as well. But here’s the thing: since I ran Carved Brink originally with Nona, I have since run it a few more times as Tuxborn has continued to develop its builds, and since I’ve been doing playtesting for Tuxborn, that by definition included re-running Carved Brink. This led me to discover some additional things about it that I’d missed the first time, and which honestly made me enjoy playing it more.

So at this point, I’m rather more kindly disposed to it than I was on the first playthrough. And I felt it was appropriate to put up an addendum to the original review.

Most of the commentary I gave in the original review still applies, and I’m not going to recap points where my opinion hasn’t changed. But I do have some additional stuff I like about Carved Brink, and which I want to note here.

Joining the Tuxborn team as a contributor!

I am very pleased to announce here that I’ve joined the team for Tuxborn, the Skyrim modpack, as a contributor! This is the result of my presence on the Tuxborn Discord channels and the assistance I’ve been giving other players there.

My contributions to the Tuxborn team will be focused on tracking useful information for other players to help them in their playthroughs, such as what followers are available in the modpack, what player homes, what armor and weapons, and such. And also, how to launch various important quests such as Legacy of the Dragonborn, Wyrmstooth, and others.

I will be contributing material on Tuxborn’s wiki, now live on its Github here:

https://github.com/Omni-guides/Tuxborn/wiki

I’m also assisting the Tuxborn devs with playtesting, since I own an OLED Steam Deck. Tuxborn is specifically intended to be performance-friendly to Steam Decks in particular, although it is definitely not limited to that device, and can be enjoyed on PCs and other handhelds as well, such as the ROG Ally.

Because of this, I’ll be giving Tuxborn a bit more visibility on this site moving forward! Look for a new page focused on Tuxborn to go live here very soon.

And, sneak preview: Tuxborn’s official final release version is very, very close to going live. So I’ll be announcing here as well when it does!

Time to swing back around to Finds-The-Way, to try to catch up some more on her Skyrim playthrough. This post is mostly familiar territory, since it involved moving the Dawnguard plot further along, and in particular running the Soul Cairn. So the main interesting content here is the language geekery! Enjoy!

In Which Kendeshel Slays the Glenmoril Coven

There’s a big gap between my previous session of Kendeshel in Skyrim and this one–about six months. Part of this is because I decided I was going to go through Finds-the-Way’s and Elessir’s playthroughs, and finish them off before I swung back around to Kendeshel. As of this writing, Kendeshel’s playthrough is now actually finished, but her posts are not.

So here’s me swinging back around to get caught up on Kendeshel’s posts! Main action here is moving the Companions questline along, but with a side helping of working on Mehrunes’ Razor. So this post is fairly light on the commentary, since most of this is stuff I’d played before.

This post contains one very minor spoiler for Legacy of the Dragonborn (a custom location for an artifact normally found during the Fishing quests of the AE).

Mod review: Legacy of the Dragonborn (version 5)

I am finally done with my very first Skyrim playthrough involving Legacy of the Dragonborn, so I can finally put up some organized thoughts about it! This review will avoid spoilers as much as possible; if you want to see in-depth spoiler commentary, pick any post in Kendeshel’s playthrough, where I talk about my experiences with the mod in depth.

Also, this review is based upon version 5 of Legacy, since that’s what I was running when Kendeshel’s playthrough started. Version 6 dropped before I could finish her run–and I did not update her to 6, on general “because it’s extremely unwise to try to update mods in the middle of a Skyrim playthrough, especially a mod as big as Legacy of the Dragonborn” grounds.

I’ll do a followup post later, since I’ve launched a new playthrough that has version 6. For now, though, this post will focus on what I encountered with version 5.

So let’s start this off with a picoreview out of the gate: I loved the hell out of playing Legacy. I have some quibbles with it, but these quibbles are minor, and are not in the slightest going to keep me from playing through it again.

More behind the fold.
